A lot of people don’t know that in addition to performing my One Man Side Show I also hand cut silhouette portraits. A silhouette portrait is a cut of the profile of a person’s face on black paper that is then usually mounted on a white background. You might have had your portrait done in school where they taped a piece of paper on the all and shined a light on your head and traced the profile of your head on the paper then cut it out. The way I do silhouette portraits is very different, I cut them by hand and eye, here’s an example:
This style of portrait cutting is a lost art, very few people in the United States (and the world) do this anymore. It’s so low tech when you consider that everyone has a camera in their phone that they carry around and can use computer programs to get different effects with. That said whenever I cut silhouette portraits at an event I’m always amazed at how quickly I get a line of people and how many kids are amazed that you can even do this! I guess skill can still trump technology and it’s appeal is how low tech (and cool) it is.
In preparation for this summer I got a bunch of new mounting cards for my sillhouette portraits. In the past I’ve used a white card, but I recently ordered some with a fancy board and my info on the back. Here’s the card without a portrait:
And here’s the card with a silhouette (not mounted):
Finally here’s the portrait on the card:

Tomorrow night I’ll be in a show called the Fussy Cloud Puppet Slam. This is a show put on by puppeteers showcasing some of their work.
I won’t be doing any magic, however I’ll be in the show doing my Hand Shadow act and cutting a couple of silhouette portraits. This show isn’t for kids, from what I under stand it’s more grown up oriented puppetry. If you are free Saturday 1/14/12 come out and see a fun show!
Today I got a fresh batch of Silhouette Portrait paper in the mail.
I was running low on it, I did a lot of silhouette portrait cutting during the holiday performing season. If you don’t know what silhouette portrait cutting is watch the video below:
What makes this paper unique is that it’s matte black on one side and white on the other. That allows me to cut portraits looking at the white side, but them mount them with the black side showing.
At the end of last month I performed at a Back To School BBQ in Covington. This show was sponsored by the King County Library System. In the show I performed my family magic and comedy show and after the show they had me cut silhouette portraits at the KCLS mobile library. He’s a picture of the fabulous ladies from the library with me:
If you look on the upper edge of the table on the left and right side you can see two silhouette portraits that I cut of the librarians!
Silhouette portrait cutting is something that I’ve been doing for about 4-5 years now and only recently have been offering it as an addition to my performances. If you’ve never seen silhouette portrait cutting here’s a quick little video of me cutting some:
This is a fun little thing you can add to your event that requires little or no set up and everyone gets a personalized piece of art to take home.
