Talented People!

Friday, July 29th, 2011

One of the coolest things about being a professional magician is all the extremely talented people I get to perform with.  On Tuesday I got to work with Tim, the Yo Yo Guy.

yo yo show

As you might have guessed by his name he’s a yo yo performer.  He does more than just a few yo yo tricks he does a full yo yo show!

If you or your kids are interested in learning to do some yo yo tricks a good place to start is with the Klutz Yo Yo Book:

Like all the other Klutz books this one is very well illustrated and teaches kids more than just the tricks, but some yo yo facts and history as well!

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

This month in the Society of American Magician’s magazine M*U*M there’s a 2 page article written about me.  I’ve gotten emails from around the world from people telling how great of an article it is!  The only problem is that my copy of the magazine hasn’t shown  up yet!

Mars Hill Church Poster from the Past…

Monday, July 25th, 2011

The other day I was doing a Google image search to see if there were any pictures of me taken at recent shows that people had uploaded to the internet.  Well I found a poster from a show that’s about 3 years old:

Church magician louie foxx

Over the years I’ve done tons of magic shows for family nights at different churches around Washington.  They are always a fun show!

Doing Homework

One reason I’ve been successful as a professional magician in addition to creating my own original magic tricks I also keep up on the latest techniques from around the world.

Here I’m studying a new book with card techniques from one of my hero’s in magic named David Berglas.  If you’ve seen me do any card tricks during my Mingling Magic Show you’ve seen something from this book.

Surprise visitors!

Monday, July 18th, 2011

A few weeks ago I was performing in Salkum, WA and the library had my name on their sign:

louie foxx

After the show I learned that not just one family, but two families (unconnected to each other) that had seen my show before were driving past the library and saw my name an stopped to see the show!  Both of these families were on road trips and didn’t live anywhere near the local area!

It’s always good to see people again!

Louie in the Puyallup Herald

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

Someone just forwarded me an article about the show I did at the Puyallup Library that is in the Puyallup Herald this week:

Magician Louie Foxx works his magic at Puyallup public library

Kai Alviar, 5, watched closely from his seat in the Puyallup Library on Friday as visiting magician Louie Foxx prepared the next trick of his show “The World of Magic.”

On a makeshift stage in front of dozens of kids, Kai’s mother Shannon stood blindfolded while Foxx placed a large flower in her right hand. Satisfied, he took a step back and brandished an Australian bullwhip.

“Hold it a little lower,” Foxx said smiling. “I’m short.”

On a count of three, the crack of the whip sang through the room, and the flower leaf dropped to the floor, followed by cheers and applause.

Foxx performed at the library as part of its summer reading program for kids. Every year, the library hosts a variety of events to help motivate children into reading during the summer. Those who don’t read risk losing their reading ability, children’s librarian Carol Hopkins said.

“Reading is a skill. It’s not just something people are born with,” Hopkins said.

In fact, books were the reason Foxx got started as a magician in the first place. Inspired by a magic act at his kindergarten, Foxx went with his mother to the library to find books that explained how magic tricks were done. By following the drawings and descriptions, he started learning some simple tricks. That became the start of his 28-year long career as a performer.

After each of his tricks, Foxx told stories about how books from different parts of the world helped him learn each trick and told the audience how to find such books in the library on their own.

With all her digits intact, Shannon Alviar returned to her seat and received congratulations from Kai. Alviar herself learned to do magic tricks as a little girl and is passing on the tradition to her son.

“He’s got a magic set at home,” she said.

Throughout the rest of the performance, Foxx entertained the crowd by making a water bottle vanish into thin air, juggling three clubs while blindfolded, balancing plastic plates on long sticks and making a card appear inside a hermetically sealed can.

“I love working with kids,” Foxx said after the show. “You never know what they’re going to do next.”

The summer reading program continues July 15 with a visit from local art teacher Kim Zeiger, who will teach kids how to draw four famous buildings from around the world.

At a July 22 story session, visitors can learn how to fold origami, and at a July 29 session they will learn conversational Russian.

On Aug. 3, the Pacific Science Center will give inform visitors about earthquakes, volcanoes, rocks and minerals. The program wraps up on Aug. 6 with a sidewalk chalk in front of the library.

It was a fun show!
